SUMMARY:Seaford's Great War Camps and Training Areas: History and Legacy - Luke Barber
DESCRIPTION:Luke writes: “The talk will describe the development of the North and South Camps at Seaford during the Great War\, looking at their fabric and the life and training of the soldiers that were there. The talk will draw on documentary\, cartographic\, photographic and archaeological sources and will show that there is more surviving of this Great War legacy today than one may have thought”. \nLuke Barber has worked as a professional archaeologist since leaving university in 1990. He worked for 15 years with Archaeology Southeast\, followed by 15 years for the Sussex Archaeological Society.  Since 2020 he has worked freelance. Over the years he has worked on a number of projects on the Western Front in both Belgium and France.

SUMMARY:D-Day and the Normandy Campaign: Myths and Legends - Lt Col (Retd) Geoffrey Vesey-Holt MBE
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation Geoffrey will look at the myths and legends of the Normandy Campaign from D-Day to the end of the Battle of Falaise on 21 August 1944. These myths and legends include that: \n\nThe Soviet Army on the eastern front would have won the war on its own.\nWe were bound to win.\nThe Germans knew that we were going to land in Normandy\nGerman tanks were better than ours\nThe American did most of the fighting and rescued the Brits by breaking out of Normandy.\n\nHe will also look at the myths and legends in the film ‘Saving Private Ryan; including the mystery of the mythical and iconic Tiger tanks. \nLt Col (Retd) Geoffrey Vesey-Holt MBE\, a graduate of Durham University (gaining a 2:1 Class in Modern History)\, was commissioned into the Royal Tank Regiment in 1974. During the Cold War he held several positions\, including that of Armoured Squadron Leader. In 1990 he was involved in developing the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank and served at the Armoured Trials and Development Unit\, Bovington. He is currently working on a history of the Royal Tank Regiment. On retirement he returned to his other passion (his first is tanks) history. He runs battlefield tours including many to Normandy\, gives lecture\, writes and walk the Sussex Weald and Downs.

SUMMARY:Britain’s Cold War ROTOR air defence radar systems - and RAF Wartling - by John Smiles
DESCRIPTION:John has led the volunteer group which cares for the remains of RAF Wartling near Pevensey for the past 23 years since he first organised the effort to pump out around 25 million litres of water. He has been the site’s guardian for approximately twice as long as the RAF operated the site! John is a keen caver\, mine explorer and amateur Cold War historian. Presented as a retrospective narrative from an ordinary volunteer\, the work combines strategic speculation with human perspective\, offering a stark warning about complacency in matters of defence. \nThe book remains strikingly relevant: it reflects enduring questions about deterrence\, readiness\, and the relationship between technological change and national security—issues that continue to resonate in modern strategic thinking. More than a piece of speculative fiction\, The Battle of Dorking helped shape public debate in Victorian Britain\, influencing defence policy discussions and inspiring a genre that persists to this day.
